The Value Of Social Media Links

There are differing opinions as to the value of social media links. Some feel they are not worth getting, while others, usually the ones who know how to employ them best, feel that their worth is considerable. However, like any source of backlink, social media links should not be the only linking method you use. They should simply be a part of a balanced strategy. In that way you will always get the most of the their value.

There are many differing types of Web 2.0 properties. Broadly speaking, they can be divided into two main groups: social bookmarking sites and social media sites. Both types have their uses. The social bookmarking sites are by far the easiest to use as it can be as simple as entering basic details of a site once and moving on to the next one. There are a number of software options that can automate social bookmarking, but it is really best to do it manually on a smaller number of sites that have a big punch.

Social media links, strictly speaking, come from social media sites. These are by and large sites where you can post your own content in the form of an article, for example, with a link back to your main site. Typical examples would be Hubpages, Wordpress, Squidoo, Blogger, and so on. However, microblogging sites like Twitter also come into this category. Used properly, social media links can be the most powerful of all.

Social media links don’t have to be used in isolation either. Rather than setting up say, six social media sites with unique content and having them all link back to your main site, which would be a great strategy by the way, you can set up the same six social media sites, link them all back to your main site – and then link them all together in a wheel fashion where each site only links to one other and the main site.

This link wheel configuration is in effect a mininet, as first described by Michael Campbell a number of years ago. It has not lost any of its power since it was first used, and will continue to be highly effective for years to come as well. The value of social media links gets even better. You don’t have to leave it at one mininet, or link wheel. You can have as many as you like. Imagine setting up one a week for several months. Don’t you think that your main site would do well? It certainly would. That’s the real value of social media links!
