After a while they notice that their web site isn’t doing very well in the search engines rankings. In fact, more often than not it’s ranked nowhere! They look puzzled, blame the SEO specialist, kick the cat, but never stop to think that the advice SEO specialists give might be worth following.
So, what is the kind of advice SEO experts expound? It’s fairly standard stuff, as already mentioned. Nothing earth shattering. It doesn’t involve chasing the next big thing, or some shiny technique that catches the eye. It simply involves doing things that were laid down as good working practices right from the start of the World Wide Web. It isn’t earth shattering, but damn it – it works! Here are a few of the important bits.
Start with the page title tag. That’s in the HTML code. It’s not the title of the text that the visitor to the web site sees; it’s the title of the page document. Use your web page’s main keyword for the page title. You can add other words too, but keep it short and place the main keyword at the beginning if possible.
Use the keyword tag. This is also part of the underlying HTML code. Use your main keyword and perhaps a few related keywords. Keep it fairly short and don’t overdo it. Most of the major search engines no longer use the keyword tag, but they won’t penalise you for using it, so why not. Use the description tag. Place your main keyword in the description near the beginning. Keep the description short and descriptive.
You page will have text on it, an article perhaps. Use an H1 tag and place your article’s title in it. Your main keyword should be in the article title near the beginning if possible. The H1 tag containing the article title should also be the first element on the page. Try to start off your article with your main keyword, or keep it near the beginning at least. Sprinkle the main keyword throughout the article a few times, but not too much.
