Search Engine Optimization Keywords

Search engine optimization keywords are the words and phrases that are important to a web page. They are the basic building blocks that help to determine the niche topic and the search engine ranking of the page. This works equally for human visitors and search engine robots. When a word or phrase is found repeated several times in the page content, and alternative meanings and synonyms of the word or phrase are also found, everyone knows exactly what the page topic is.

The search engine optimization basics starts with keywords. You have to do keyword research, perhaps build up a small keyword list, check out the competition, balancing high searched for terms against lowly competitive terms, choose the best keyword phrase for your articles, and start writing. That alone will get you going.

You can, however, take it a further step and find synonyms and alternative meanings for your main keywords and include these in your articles too. This is sometimes also known as latent semantic indexing, or LSI. It is also known as theming, and this term perhaps describes the strategy best, for having words and phrases that effectively back up each other and drive home the message that the page is definitely about a particular subject, is a very effective way of determining the theme of the page.

You have to find your search engine optimization keywords before you can start writing or creating your web pages. You can use the excellent free keyword research tool provided by Google, for example. Start by entering the main broad phrase topic, then check the results to see what might fit. You will be presented with a keyword list of words and phrases and the number of relevant searches per month for each one. The higher the search number, the more likely it will have strong competition.

You can check the competition in Google by entering the keyword surrounded by quotation marks. This is known as an exact match search. Just above the search engine results you will see the number of overall results for that keyword. This is, broadly speaking, your competition. If that number is in the millions, you should perhaps reconsider your choice and seek something less competitive. If it in five figures, or low six figures, then you have a much better chance of getting a good rankings for that term. Don’t be afraid of competition, but if you choose your search engine optimization keywords carefully and wisely, you will see the best results.
